Transport services available when travelling to Palma, Majorca -
By Air:
Palma de Mallorca (PMI) Airport or Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca is a major airport located approximately 8 km east to Palma city. It is the third largest airport in Spain and one of the busiest airports in Europe during the summer months. The city airport is served by lots of airline companies from many European countries. It is the main hub for German carrier Air Berlin.
The airport has four terminals of which terminal A is used for domestic flights and terminal B, C, D is used for international flights. The airport serves around 25 million passengers per year. The airport is well connected with Palma and other major towns and resorts on the island by buses and metered cabs. The journey takes around 20 minutes to reach city centre
By Boat:
Another way to reach Palma is by boat. Though this mean of transport is not as popular. Many cruise-ships run from Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Mahon and Denia. Balearia and Trasmediterranea offer super fast ferries from mainland Spain to Majorca that reach Palma in around three hours.
By Taxi:
Majorca is not connected with mainland Spain or other islands by roads or bridges. One has to cover 125 kms to travel from east to west and it takes around two hours to drive this distance. All destinations throughout Majorca have been well connected with Palma by excellent transport infrastructure and good road networks. There are several taxi companies that offer transport facilities and those taxis can be hired anywhere easily.
By Train:
The two major railway routes run out of Placa d'Espanya in Palma. The first track, known as ‘Train to Soller’ goes through picturesque Sierra de Tramuntana mountains to the town of Soller. This train covers scenic route since 1912 and highly recommended to enjoy the spice of island.
The other railway route is controlled by Transport de les Illes Balears (TIB) that runs north to Inca and onwards to Sa Pobla and Manacor. The locals call this train as “Leather express” as it runs to Inca, which is famous for inexpensive leather goods.
Metro
The new Metro of Palma de Mallorca was opened on the 25th of April 2007. The main station is located at the Plaça d'Espanya and it has nine stations covering a distance of 7.2 km up to University of the Balearic Islands. These trains run daily from 6.15 am to 11 pm.
By Bus:
The city has an efficient bus service, which is operated by EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transports) and the regional bus service, which offers transport to all over island is mainly operated by TIB, (Transport de les Iles Balears). EMT buses have onboard screens and loudspeakers for information about the stops and routes. Those buses run out from Placa d'Espanya.
The Number 50 sightseeing bus is a “Enjoy Palma in a day” type bus that covers all major attractions of the city. The popular Bus de Nit or ‘Night Bus’ offers the locals and tourists the opportunity to enjoy the nightlife of the city.
By Foot:
This is the best way to get around Palma to cover short distances and to experience great history and architecture of Palma city. Palma's tourist board provides a selection of cultural and historical guided tours that explore hidden and fascinating parts of the city. Whilst walking around the Palma, tourists can also admire the beauty and vibrancy of the city centre.
